Mercy in the Prophetic Tradition

This report attempted to highlight the aspect of mercy, penitence and forgiveness as demonstrated in both the Prophetic tradition as well as various classical Islamic legal texts. The centerpiece of this report is a focus on humane rulings within the Islamic legal tradition itself, including a list of individuals who had been spared despite intentionally insulting the Prophet PBUH as well as a list of individuals who are popularly cited as examples of people who had been given the death penalty for the act of blasphemy but had actually been put to death for other reasons such as treason, conspiring against the Muslim state, aiding the enemy and so on. The key point was to highlight how the tradition of mercy both exists as a precedent but also that such mercy leads to positive outcomes in the future.
